Inside Scoop on Poker Player Activism, Part 1

poker

The summer of 2006 was a turning point for poker players and tournament organizers alike. Unimpressed with prior efforts to organize players or a player-management advisory board, I arrived at the World Series of Poker with no thoughts of getting involved with either the WSOPs nascent Players Advisory Council (PAC) or the newborn World Poker Association (WPA).

Two years later, I serve on the WSOP’s constructive PAC and am Immediate Past Chair of the World Poker Association, having resigned my post as Chair and member of the board this past June. History is instructive in what can work and what is destined to fizzle, as poker players, tournament organizers and card room executives continue to plow the course of player-management relations.

Michael Phelps going all in at the World Series of Poker?

Got to spend a few minutes with Michael Phelps today after he did some promotional stuff for Visa. He was absolutely exhausted and could barely keep his eyes open, having done too many interviews on too little sleep.

“I am so tired right now,” he said, and you could see it in his face.

I asked him a lot of Baltimore questions for an article that will run later in the week, mostly about what it’s going to be like to come back to Charm City. He’s really looking forward to the Ravens season and says he’s not counting out Joe Flacco as the starter at quarterback just yet. (We’ll give you the rest of his Ravens-related thoughts over the next few days.)

During his big news conference at Prince Jun Palace in Chaoyang Park, he talked about how much he wants to meet Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods, something I suspect you’ll see published in just about every newspaper in the country tomorrow, but later behind closed doors I asked him if there is anything he’d like to do now that he has plenty of time, money, and fame to achieve it.

SOUTH Sydney Leagues club has delivered a humiliating defeat to Peter Homes a Court and Russell Crowe’s proposal to ban poker machines - just three members supported it among more than 100 who voted yesterday.

“This was a vision that a lot of people embraced,” said Souths Leagues Club president Bill Alexiou-Hucker yesterday, after the vote.

“No one - not one charity, no corporations, no community that flooded the football club with congratulations over a no-poker machine venue - ever contacted me to see how they could help us.

Have the paybacks on full-pay video poker machines gone down?

I think you work for the casinos. I have been playing video poker for the past 5-yrs, much of my play being in Las Vegas. I use Bob Dancer’s theory of play and have been using his software for the all of the 5-yrs. I know how to select full pay machines and understand the odds. My feedback is that there have been less and less paybacks on the full pay machines without the pay scale changing. All of my competitive advantage players are talking about it and we all can’t be wrong. Don’t say it’s just an unlucky day because sometimes moving to a different casino that day works. It appears that they are either paying that day for almost everybody or they are cold to everybody. It never used to be that way so something is up. The bankroll to play is going up and up on quarters and the payback is going down and down. The casinos are screwing with us and we all know it!
